Embroidered vs Woven Patches: Which Should You Choose?

Texture or detail? How embroidered and woven patches differ, and how to choose for your artwork.

Embroidered vs Woven Patches: Which Should You Choose?

Embroidered and woven patches are both made from thread, but they're built in different ways — and that changes how your design looks.

How each one is made

Embroidered patches are stitched on top of a twill base. Thread is layered in satin and fill stitches, so the surface is raised and textured.

Woven patches are made on a loom: fine threads are woven together into a flat fabric. Because the threads are thinner and tighter, the patch holds far more detail.

Detail and small text

If your design has small lettering, thin lines or intricate illustration, woven usually wins. As a rule of thumb, embroidered lettering should be at least about 1/4" tall to stay readable; woven can go smaller.

Texture and presence

Embroidery has depth you can feel — that classic "patch" look on jackets, hats and uniforms. If you want the design to stand off the garment, embroidered (or 3D puff) is the stronger choice.

Feel and weight

Woven patches are thinner and more flexible, which suits lightweight apparel and labels. Embroidered patches are thicker and more rigid.

Quick decision guide

- Bold logo, simple shapes, classic texture → Embroidered - Small text, fine detail, flat finish → Woven - Clothing labels → Woven - Hats and jackets with a strong presence → Embroidered
